24/7 drinking is stretching police resources
14 October 2008
Simon Reed, Vice-Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says:
“24/7 drinking has resulted in our resources being stretched to breaking point. Many officers are working longer hours and in some areas of the country afternoon shifts are now going well into the early hours of the following morning. The problems have been further compounded by ‘super pubs’ which often have in excess of 1,000 people are packed in. When trouble flares up these premises are difficult to police without there being a significant strain on police resources. The impact is that all too often there are delays getting to other urgent calls; but regrettably the government didn’t stop to think of the consequences of its actions when it introduced round the clock drinking.”
