Police Federation statement on police funding
08 December 2010
Paul McKeever, Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says:
“We support the Opposition’s call for the government to look again at the police funding settlement post-comprehensive spending review. The front loading of cuts in years one and two will have a disastrous affect on frontline policing services and will undoubtedly result in a detrimental service for the public and victims of crime. The government continually trumpet the success of former New York and Los Angeles police chief, Bill Bratton, to cut crime, yet fail to recognise that Mr Bratton achieved this by increasing police spend and increasing police numbers. The government must recognise that cutting the police budget by 20 percent, and with such large cuts in the early years, this will have unintended consequences and present very real risks.”
