DNA database comment

24 May 2007

Alan Gordon, Vice Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales:

“DNA has been the most powerful tool in the fight against crime in recent times.

“The current system is already flexible and Chief Police Officers have the discretion to dispose of DNA samples when no action is taken against someone taken in for questioning. However we do recognise the need for a regulatory body to oversee this process and ensure continuity.

“The very fact that DNA samples are on a database does not in itself infer criminal activity and in the vast majority of cases, so long as those tested do not participate in criminal activity in the future, they will have nothing to worry about”
