Federation statement re serious injury of West Midlands police officer and death of Warwickshire fire fighter
03 November 2007
Jan Berry, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales said:
"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the Warwickshire fire fighter who died last night and his three colleagues who are still missing. This terrible news follows closely on from Friday morning’s incident where a 39-year-old West Midlands police officer was mown down as she tried to arrest a suspect. She remains in hospital fighting for her life.
"Unfortunately, it is often times of tragedy such as the horrific attack on Detective Constable Catherine Corbett and the death of a fire fighter that act as a stark reminder of the extreme dangers that all our emergency services face day in, day out.
"Strong feelings of solidarity and genuine respect exist among ambulance workers, fire fighters and police officers as they recognise the intensely difficult situations they all face in the course of their duty.
"Without exception, all of these people go knowingly into dangerous situations in order to help and protect members of the public, with little thought for their own safety. They are truly brave and I pay tribute to their unrelenting courage."
