The Office of Constable

Jan Berry, Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, “The Office of Constable is sacrosanct.”

The Police Federation of England and Wales believe:

  • The Office of Constable is unique because it is the duty of police officers to protect life and property, preserve order, and prevent the commission of offences and where an offence has been committed, to take measures to bring the offender to justice.

  • Entry to the service should be at Constable level for all sworn officers.

  • A grounding in policing at Constable level is imperative to any rank and enables officers to specialise and move between specialisms.
